IHRC

Our Current Aims

Our Achievements

Many of our core group started out as the ‘East Timor Independence Committee’,  to campaign for the right of self-determination for the people of Timor-Leste. When independence was clearly in sight for the fledgling nation, in 2000 we decided to broaden our focus and embrace other struggles within Indonesia as well. Our first campaign as the newly reconfigured ‘Indonesia Human Rights Committee’ was on the issue of the Suharto assets in Aotearoa.

Today, the Indonesia Human Rights Committee looks back on ten years of campaigning for those without a voice, such as the people of West Papua.

IHRC has successfully promoted a ‘Don’t Buy Kwila’ campaign, an important initiative to protect the unique ‘paradise forests’ of West Papua. Without our work few people would understand what is happening for our Melanesian neighbours, and the human rights and environmental tragedy that is unfolding for them.

IHRC is respected by its human rights organisation partners in Aotearoa, Indonesia and around the world.

While a volunteer organisation, IHRC has nevertheless built up considerable expertise and serves as a resource for students and the general public.
